San Diego Wedding Reception Planning: Timeline, Sound and Lighting Tips

A great reception is mostly planning. Whether your wedding is at a coastal venue, a vineyard in North County or a hotel ballroom downtown, a clear timeline and the right sound and lighting plan keep guests engaged and the dance floor full.

Build the timeline backward from the dance floor

Start with when you want the dance floor open and work backward: ceremony, cocktail hour, introductions, dinner, toasts, first dance, cake and open dancing. Share the timeline with your DJ, planner and photographer so everyone is working from the same page.

Plan sound for ceremony and reception separately

Outdoor ceremonies need wireless microphones and a sound system sized for the guest count. A separate sound setup for the ceremony is available, and MY DJs Silver, Gold and Platinum packages cover both ceremony and reception.

Use lighting to set the mood

Uplights, a dance floor light tree and a monogram gobo change the room completely. A set of four LED uplights, for example, is a popular add-on that color-matches your wedding palette.

Give your DJ direction, not a script

Share 10 to 15 songs across genres you love and any you do not want played. Your DJ can read the room and fill in the rest. For multicultural weddings, tell your DJ which traditions and songs matter so they can blend them smoothly.

Know your venue rules

Ask your venue about sound limits, end times, power access and load-in. An experienced local DJ will usually know these already.
